Big Barker Dog Bed Review: 3 Years Later (Honest Assessment)

Big Barker Dog Bed Review: 3 Years Later (Honest Assessment)

When my German Shepherd Charlie was diagnosed with hip dysplasia, I went searching for a bed that would actually help. I'd already wasted hundreds on beds that flattened within months.

Then I found Big Barker.

Three years later, Charlie still uses this bed every single day. The foam hasn't compressed. His mobility has noticeably improved. And I've recommended it to countless dog owners since.

But is it worth the premium price? Let me share my honest experience after 3+ years of daily use.

What Is Big Barker?

Big Barker was founded by Eric Shannon, who couldn't find a quality bed for his 92-pound dog. Every bed he bought flattened within months. So he created his own.

Today, Big Barker is known for:

  • 7 inches of American-made therapeutic foam
  • 10-year "won't flatten" guarantee
  • Clinical study proving joint pain reduction
  • Made specifically for dogs over 50 lbs

They're not the cheapest option. Not even close. But they stand behind their product with a 10-year warranty and 180-day trial—something cheap beds never offer.

My Experience: 3 Years With Big Barker

Why I Bought It

Charlie was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at age 6. He was stiff in the mornings, slow to get up, and clearly uncomfortable.

I'd already tried:

  • Cheap Amazon beds (flattened in weeks)
  • Mid-range "orthopedic" beds (flattened in months)
  • Expensive beds from pet stores (still flattened)

The pattern was clear: beds marketed as orthopedic weren't actually providing support for an 85-pound German Shepherd.

Then I found Big Barker. The University of Pennsylvania study caught my attention—actual clinical proof that dogs showed improved mobility after using the bed. The 10-year guarantee suggested they actually believed in their product.

I took the plunge.

First Impressions

The bed arrived compressed and vacuum-sealed. It took about 24-48 hours to fully expand (this is normal for quality foam).

First thing I noticed: This bed is HEAVY. Seriously heavy. Moving it around isn't easy, but that weight comes from dense, quality foam.

Second thing: The cover feels premium. Soft microfiber that's clearly higher quality than typical pet bed fabrics.

Charlie's reaction: He walked over, sniffed it, and lay down within 5 minutes. He slept on it that first night and hasn't looked back.

After 3 Years

Here's what matters: The foam hasn't flattened.

After 3 years of daily use by an 85-pound dog, I can press on the foam and it still bounces back. No crater in the middle. No permanent body impression. It looks and feels nearly identical to when we bought it.

Charlie's mobility: Within 2-3 weeks of switching to the Big Barker, I noticed Charlie's morning stiffness improved. He got up easier. He seemed more comfortable.

Is that 100% attributable to the bed? I can't say definitively—he was also on joint supplements. But the timing was clear, and the improvement was noticeable.

The Good

Genuinely doesn't flatten. This is the biggest selling point, and it's true. Three years in, the foam is still supportive.

Noticeable improvement in Charlie's comfort. He gets up easier, seems less stiff, and actually uses the bed consistently.

Premium construction. The cover has held up to regular washing. The zippers still work. The stitching is intact.

10-year warranty. If it does flatten, they'll replace it. That's confidence in their product.

180-day trial. Enough time to genuinely test it, not just see first impressions.

The Not-So-Good

The price. There's no getting around it—Big Barker beds are expensive. £250-350+ depending on size and style.

It's heavy. Moving it for cleaning or rearranging isn't easy.

The cover shows hair. The microfiber is quality, but dog hair is visible on darker colours. It brushes off easily, but you'll notice it.

Not for chewers. The cover is durable but not chew-proof. If your dog destroys beds, this isn't the answer.

Only for dogs over 50 lbs. They now make beds for smaller dogs, but the flagship 7-inch beds are designed for large breeds.

The Clinical Study

This is what sets Big Barker apart from marketing claims.

The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine conducted a clinical study on Big Barker beds. Key findings:

  • Dogs showed reduced joint pain after using the bed
  • Improved gait and mobility observed within 28 days
  • Veterinarians noted visible improvement in arthritic dogs

This isn't marketing fluff—it's actual clinical research from a respected veterinary institution.

Who Should Buy Big Barker?

Definitely Buy If:

✅ You have a large breed dog (50+ lbs) ✅ Your dog has joint issues (dysplasia, arthritis) ✅ Your dog is a senior ✅ You've had beds flatten before ✅ You want a long-term investment ✅ You're tired of replacing cheap beds

Maybe Consider If:

Don't Buy If:

❌ Your dog destroys beds (it's not chew-proof) ❌ You want the cheapest option (it's premium priced) ❌ Your dog prefers hard surfaces (some dogs do)

How to Choose the Right Big Barker

Step 1: Choose Your Style

  • Sleek – Your dog sprawls and moves around while sleeping
  • Headrest – Your dog likes to rest their chin on something (most popular)
  • Sofa – Your dog likes feeling enclosed on multiple sides

Step 2: Choose Your Size

Measure your dog lying stretched out (nose to tail base). Add 6-12 inches.

  • Large (48x30): Dogs 50-80 lbs
  • XL (52x36): Dogs 80-120 lbs
  • Giant (60x48): Dogs 120+ lbs

When in doubt, size up.

Step 3: Choose Add-Ons

Recommended: Waterproof liner (especially for seniors or dogs with accidents)

Optional: Personalized embroidery, extra covers

Caring for Your Big Barker

Regular Maintenance

  • Weekly: Vacuum or brush off hair
  • Monthly: Wash the cover (machine washable, tumble dry low)
  • As needed: Spot clean the foam

Dealing with Accidents

If the foam gets wet:

  1. Remove cover immediately
  2. Blot (don't rub) excess moisture from foam
  3. Allow foam to air dry completely (may take 24-48 hours)
  4. Use a waterproof liner to prevent future issues

Extending Lifespan

  • Rotate the bed occasionally so wear distributes evenly
  • Keep in climate-controlled environment (extreme heat/cold affects foam)
  • Use the waterproof liner
  • Wash cover before dirt and oils build up

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Big Barker worth the money?

+
For large breeds with joint issues, yes. The combination of clinical proof, 10-year warranty, and genuine durability justifies the premium price. I've had mine for 3 years and it's still like new—that's value.

How long does Big Barker last?

+
With proper care, 10+ years. The 10-year warranty covers flattening, which shows their confidence. Many owners report their beds lasting well beyond the warranty period.

Does Big Barker really help with arthritis?

+
The University of Pennsylvania study showed reduced joint pain and improved mobility in dogs using Big Barker beds. My personal experience with Charlie supports this—his morning stiffness noticeably improved.

Can I wash a Big Barker bed?

+
The cover is machine washable. The foam cannot be machine washed but can be spot cleaned. A waterproof liner prevents most foam contamination issues.

What if my dog doesn't like it?

+
Big Barker offers a 180-day trial. If your dog won't use it, you can return it. That's six months to test—far more generous than most pet products.

Is Big Barker good for puppies?

+
The 7-inch beds are designed for dogs over 50 lbs. For puppies, Big Barker makes 4-inch versions, but most owners wait until their dog is full-grown before investing in a premium bed.

Does the foam have a smell?

+
Some minor off-gassing is normal for new foam beds. It typically dissipates within a few days. Opening windows or letting the bed air out speeds this up.

The Bottom Line

After 3 years with the Big Barker, here's my honest assessment:

It's expensive. No way around it. This is a premium product with a premium price.

It works. The foam genuinely doesn't flatten. Charlie's comfort genuinely improved. The clinical study backs up what I've experienced.

It lasts. Three years of daily use and it still looks nearly new. The 10-year warranty isn't marketing—they expect it to last.

Is it worth it? For large breeds with joint issues, absolutely. I've spent more on cheap beds that kept flattening than I spent on this single Big Barker.

If you have a large dog and you're tired of replacing beds, or if your dog has joint problems and needs real support, the Big Barker is the best investment you can make.

Charlie would agree—if he weren't busy sleeping on his.
